Katie pin-up

January 28th, 2009 (12:24 am)

just a quick watercolour of tajasel, postcard size

I used a different watercolour paper than usual, and I am not fond of it. It has a strong tooth, you can see it a bit in the scan. It also seemed to absorb water at a higher rate than the stuff I'm accustomed to.

pretty colors!

I like it! Portraits in watercolor have always been a challenge for me, but you're really good at it!

Thanks! I've always thought it deeply nifty how often her hair looks like that in photos, so thought I'd try painting it.

Heh, this is just me being lazy and not dying it - it's an easy effect to achieve ;-)

the bottom is so light because it was bleached a long time ago, and then it got gradually darker because the top wasn't bleached first. it's almost flame like there, I did kinda like it, but I was bored of red.

I was eventually planning on painting you with purple hair, too. I've two more started from last night too. I wasn't too happy with the one so far, but I'll still scan it so that you can see it (that one has red, though) and the other one was far too wet because of how I did the background, to work on the you bit at all, but I think I'll do that one with purple (the light in the pic wasn't great, and it was pulled back, so it's difficult to see the actual colour).

Maybe I can actually pose rather than you having to work from photos if i get to come over for a sensible amount of time in the summer.

That would be extremely awesome. I've some outdoor photos in mind, but in that case, I may ask Alex to take photos, so that I can then work inside on them. I'm not fond of painting outside. Also, possibly, up a mountain. Or, dragging my supplies all the way out to the nude beach.

Really?! Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I really, really like the results you got with this paper.

Hmmm...I went back and compared to some of the other watercolors you've posted. I'm not sure if it's because of the paper, or just because of how you decided to paint it...but it has less "strokiness" to it.

think/twirling hair

I think my "not fond of it" may just translate to "wasn't use to it", you know? The other paper is.. hard to describe but is almost like very, very thick toilet paper. It's very soft, very absorbent, and stays wet for ages. I have to be careful overworking it at all because it'll start to pick up paper, in fact. This one seemed almost slick, and water proof, like the paint floats on top, and seemed to dry very quickly.

I think the more I use this, the more I'll get use to it, I might be able to tell if I was just frustrated last night, or if I really do prefer the other paper.

I know what you mean. I guess it also depends on the preference of the user, but I think a good watercolor paper is a happy medium between absorbent and resistant. Too absorbent, and even though it stays wet, it shows every single brush stroke in an area that's supposed to flow together. Too resistant, and it's hard to layer anything without rediluting everything underneath it, and the color saturation doesn't seem as good.

the other painting of Katie I worked on last night that I'll scan today and post was a bit like that.

Didn't seem to affect the paints though-they look great. What type of watercolour paints do you use? Tubes, powdered, pan? Which ones do you like using the best? Do you ever do anything outdoors (a la urban sketchers)?
Brann got me two waterbrushes for Xmas, but I've yet to use them. I'm wondering if I need a little pan watercolour set-up for doing more stuff outside...

creative/writing

Thanks! I'm a little unhappy about the crunchy line where her skin meets her hair, but eh.

The ones that I've been posting here lately have been pan. A lot of the goddess pieces used tubes, as well as the pan, though. I'm not much of a snob about them, just my watercolour pencils, so far those have to be Derwent. I don't have a strong preference over which sort, it depends on what I'm working on and how dense I want it. (The piece in the icon I'm using is watercolour, and that used tubes.) I have one of those brushes, and it's pretty nifty/novel, I can see how it would be great for outdoors, but I so rarely paint out doors, since I'm kind of particular about having things set out just so around me I'd need a rather large outdoor set up. Also, random crap always seems to blow into my paint as it's drying :/ I should consider sketching out doors, though, and then bringing it inside to colour.

I visited the Derwent pencil factory when I was a kid, and you got freebies as part of the ticket price.

Meh I didn't notice that; the colours are amazingly vibrant!

Do you have a favourite brand of pan watercolour? I bought this book over the holidays and like it. He has a few photos of his outdoor setup that you might find helpful if you'd like to pursue that. You have such a nice garden/yard you should sketch it this spring/summer!
